授業概要:
2024年度春学期 The purpose of this course is to study anime movies and serials by focusing on their stylistic details and thematic motifs on the one hand, and the socio-historical context of their production and consumption on the other. In addition to such central themes and motifs as urban space,war, violence, ruins, environment, magic, curse, the non-human, and the post-human, we will pay close attention to the history of anime from the 1950sto the present. We will analyze the formal and stylistic specificity of each anime (narrative structure, world-setting, audio-visual form, etc.) by linking them to a wide range of issues and questions pertaining to aesthetics, subculture,history, and politics. The tentative list of anime movies and serials to be examined include, but not limited to, Panda Kopanda, Howl’s Moving Castle, Mazinger Z, Ghost in the Shell:Stand Alone Complex, Violet Evergarden, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Dororo, JujutsuKaisen 0: The Movie, etc.
授業の到達目標:
--Students will learn why anime is an important cultural text, and what socio-political, historical, and philosophical issues they often raise for further critical thinking.
--Students are expected to acquire analytical skills to discuss anime as a complex text from thematic and formal perspectives.

2022年度春学期 [授業実施方法: Face-to-Face]The purpose of this course is to study anime by focusing on their stylistic details and thematic motifs. The list of anime movies and TV series to be examined include, among others, Akira, Pom Poko, Perfect Blue, Howl’s Moving Castle, The Sky Crawlers, Natsume’s Book of Friends, Psycho-Pass, Your Name., and Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train. These works deal with the questions of urban space, war, violence, ruins, environment, ecology, dream, magic, the everyday, the non-human, and the post-human as central themes and as sources of creative inspirations. We will closely analyze and discuss not only each animation work (its narrative, world-setting, audio-visual form, etc.) but also a wide range of issues on anime aesthetics, Japanese culture, history, etc.

The questions of urban space, war, violence, ruins, environment,ecology, dream, magic, the everyday, the non-human, and the post-human will be examined as central themes and as sources of creative inspirations for many anime works. We will closely analyze and discuss not only each anime (its narrative, world-setting, audio-visual form, etc.) but also a wide range of issues on aesthetics, subculture, history, and politics. The tentative list of anime movies and series to be examined include Howl’s Moving Castle, Paprika, Natsume’s Book of Friends, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Psycho-Pass, Land of the Lustrous, Violet Evergarden, Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie, etc.
